Macaw - Blue Throated (Florida Only)

🦜 Blue‑throated Macaw

The Blue‑throated Macaw (Ara glaucogularis) is one of the world’s most striking and rare parrots, known for its vivid coloration, graceful flight, and critically endangered status. Endemic to a small region of north‑central Bolivia—specifically the seasonally flooded savannas of Los Llanos de Moxos—this species has become a symbol of both natural beauty and urgent conservation efforts.

🌿 Appearance and Physical Traits
  • Adults reach about 85 cm in length, with a wingspan of roughly 90–100 cm and a weight between 900–1100 g.

  • Their plumage is a brilliant combination of:
Bright blue on the head, wings, and upper body
Golden‑yellow on the chest, abdomen, and under‑tail
A distinctive blue patch on the throat, which sets them apart from the similar Blue‑and‑yellow Macaw.

  • The face features bare white skin with five or six black feather lines, unique to each individual—almost like a fingerprint.

  • Eye color changes with age, allowing observers to estimate maturity.

🌎 Habitat and Range
  • Found only in Bolivia, primarily in the Beni Department.

  • Their total habitat covers about 2,508 square kilometers, split into two sub‑populations north and south of Trinidad.

  • They inhabit palm‑rich savannas, relying heavily on Motacú palms for nesting cavities and food.

🍃 Behavior and Ecology
  • Blue‑throated Macaws are diurnal, arboreal, and primarily frugivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, and palm nuts.

  • They form strong pair bonds and communicate with loud, resonant calls typical of macaws.

  • Their flight is powerful and elegant, reaching speeds up to 56 km/h.
