🦜 Blue‑throated Macaw
The Blue‑throated Macaw (Ara glaucogularis) is one of the world’s most striking and rare parrots, known for its vivid coloration, graceful flight, and critically endangered status. Endemic to a small region of north‑central Bolivia—specifically the seasonally flooded savannas of Los Llanos de Moxos—this species has become a symbol of both natural beauty and urgent conservation efforts.
🌿 Appearance and Physical Traits
Adults reach about 85 cm in length, with a wingspan of roughly 90–100 cm and a weight between 900–1100 g.
Their plumage is a brilliant combination of:
Bright blue on the head, wings, and upper body
Golden‑yellow on the chest, abdomen, and under‑tail
A distinctive blue patch on the throat, which sets them apart from the similar Blue‑and‑yellow Macaw.The face features bare white skin with five or six black feather lines, unique to each individual—almost like a fingerprint.
Eye color changes with age, allowing observers to estimate maturity.
🌎 Habitat and Range
Found only in Bolivia, primarily in the Beni Department.
Their total habitat covers about 2,508 square kilometers, split into two sub‑populations north and south of Trinidad.
They inhabit palm‑rich savannas, relying heavily on Motacú palms for nesting cavities and food.
🍃 Behavior and Ecology
Blue‑throated Macaws are diurnal, arboreal, and primarily frugivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, and palm nuts.
They form strong pair bonds and communicate with loud, resonant calls typical of macaws.
Their flight is powerful and elegant, reaching speeds up to 56 km/h.
