Blue-naped Parrot — Wild Population Facts (2026)
The Blue-naped Parrot (Tanygnathus lucionensis), also known as the Luzon parrot or Philippine green parrot, is native to the Philippines and nearby islands. This striking medium-sized parrot is recognized for its bright green body and blue nape.
Wild Population Status
According to the IUCN Red List, the Blue-naped Parrot is currently classified as Near Threatened, reflecting declining wild numbers due to habitat loss and trapping for the bird trade.
Threats Facing the Species
The Blue-naped Parrot’s population is shrinking primarily because of:
Loss and fragmentation of forest habitat
Illegal trapping and trade pressure
Regional declines on multiple islands Even in protected areas, enforcement is often limited, so threats continue.
While the Blue Nape is not critically endangered we do not know of many birds left within the USA. Birds are extremely difficult to import so we would love to add more of these magnificent birds to the USA population so they can be enjoyed in future generations.
