Macaw Scarlet

🦜 Overall Description
A Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) is a large, powerful, and highly intelligent parrot native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Adults typically reach 32–36 inches (81–91 cm) in length and weigh around 900–1,200 grams, with nearly half their length coming from their tail feathers. Their striking coloration—scarlet red body, yellow shoulders, and blue wing and tail feathers—makes them instantly recognizable.
Their lifespan is exceptionally long: 40–50 years in the wild and up to 70+ years in captivity, meaning owning one is a multi‑decade commitment.
💛 Personality & Behavior
Scarlet Macaws are known for their bold, curious, and sometimes strong‑willed personalities. They are extremely social birds that form deep bonds with their human families. Many are affectionate, playful, and eager to learn tricks or mimic speech. However, they can also be:
Very loud, capable of ear‑piercing calls
Stubborn or assertive, especially without consistent training
Prone to becoming “one‑person birds” if not socialized early
Destructive chewers, needing constant enrichment
Emotionally sensitive, reflecting their owner’s mood and becoming agitated if stressed
Because they are monogamous in the wild, they often bond intensely with one person and require daily interaction to prevent behavioral issues like feather plucking or aggression.
🏡 Housing & Environment
A Scarlet Macaw needs a very large enclosure—far bigger than most standard bird cages. Minimum recommended size is:
36” x 48” x 60” with 1–1.5 inch bar spacing
Multiple perches, branches, and heavy‑duty chew toys
A secure lock (they learn to open simple latches!)
Placement in a bright, draft‑free area near family activity
They also require 4–6 hours of supervised out‑of‑cage time daily to exercise, explore, and socialize. Without this, they can become stressed or destructive.
Many owners opt for large indoor aviaries or even outdoor aviaries in suitable climates.
