The male Solomon Island Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus solomonensis) is instantly recognizable by his vibrant emerald green coloration and striking accent colors. Like females, males of this species played a role in one of the most fascinating classification errors in ornithology, as the two sexes were once believed to be entirely different species due to their dramatic visual differences. Eclectus are an excellent choice for those with allergies to birds as they produce almost no dust.

Appearance & Characteristics

Coloration

Males are primarily a brilliant emerald green. They feature flashes of deep blue on the bend of the wing and primary flight feathers, along with bright scarlet red underwing coverts and along the sides of the body. These contrasting colors are most visible in flight.

Tail

The tail is predominantly green, with subtle blue edging on the outer feathers and faint yellow undertones near the tips, typical of the Solomon Island subspecies.

Beak

Male Solomon Island Eclectus parrots have a distinctive two-tone beak often described as a “candy corn” appearance, with a coral to orange upper mandible and a black lower mandible.

Eyes

Adult males have reddish-orange irises, giving them a bright, alert expression.

Size

Solomon Island males are slightly smaller than some other Eclectus subspecies, typically measuring approximately 12–13 inches in length and weighing around 12–15 ounces.

Intelligence & Personality

Highly intelligent and curious, male Solomon Island Eclectus parrots are known for their gentle demeanor, strong problem-solving skills, and love of foraging and enrichment activities.

Vocalization & Speech

Males are excellent talkers with clear, pleasant voices. They are capable of mimicking human speech as well as a variety of sounds, whistles, and environmental noises.

Dietary Needs
