Black Capped Caique

The Black-Capped Caique (Pionites melanocephalus), also known as the Black-Headed Parrot, is a small but bold South American parrot native to the Amazon Basin. Often referred to as the “clown of the parrot world,” Caiques are beloved for their nonstop energy, playful personalities, and striking color patterns.

Size & Appearance

Black-Capped Caiques typically reach 9–10 inches in length, making them a compact yet sturdy parrot.

Head: Distinctive black cap covering the forehead, crown, and nape

Face & Neck: Bright yellow to orange cheeks with soft white feathering along the chest

Body: Vibrant green wings, back, and upper tail

Details: Adults often show orange-red tones on the thighs (commonly called “down pants”) and gray-to-black feet

Their bold color contrast and expressive eyes make them one of the most visually striking small parrots.

Personality & Behavior

Caiques are known for being extremely active, curious, and entertaining. These birds thrive on interaction and enrichment.

Playful & Energetic: Caiques love to hop, wrestle, roll onto their backs, and invent games

Highly Social: They bond strongly with their people and enjoy being part of daily activities

Unique Behaviors: A favorite Caique trait is “surfing,” where they rub their face, wings, and chest against towels, blankets, or soft objects

Because of their intelligence and energy level, Caiques do best in homes that can provide ample out-of-cage time, mental stimulation, and daily interaction.

Care Considerations

Black-Capped Caiques require a balanced diet, regular enrichment, and consistent social time to thrive. Their playful nature means they benefit greatly from toys, climbing opportunities, and structured interaction.
